I’m not sure if additional lectures were solicited after the success of the Gunn’s Opera House event, or if Karl requested the opportunities, but either way, after a few days of rest, regular meals and catching up with his parents, five sisters, one brother and other family members and friends. The lecture circuit got underway.
In the Truro Daily News, it was advertised:
Karl M. Creelman is to deliver his “Around the World” lecture under the auspices of the Upper Stewiacke Presbyterian church on Tuesday next. (September 25).
Soon after, he lectured at the Y.M.C.A. Hall in Westville.
The lectures were usually accompanied by a small write-up in the local papers. In the Westville, NS. Standard:
Mr Creelman has been delivering his lecture before large and enthusiastic audiences, and should be greeted with a good house in Westville.
The following day, the Standard reviewed the event, noting:
The lecture was well worth hearing; instructive, entertaining, and at times amusing, and all told in a straightforward manner without blow or ostentation of any kind. Karl Creelman is a modest young man who tells his story well, and his pluck and perseverance are a credit not only to himself but to his native Province.
On Friday evening, November 29th, Court Hiawatha, No 108, Foresters held the first of a series of social gatherings of its members. “It was thought an opportune time to initiate these coming monthly social functions, and at the same time to welcome the greatest travelled Forester of the world - Mr. Karl Creelman.”
The GlobeTrotter brother got a most hearty welcome, and the happy incidents he told of Foresters he had met in different parts of the world, were exceedingly enjoyed by all. (Truro News)
Then, Karl was lecturing in Antigonish, where he was the guest of Professor A.G. McDonald, once Creelman’s next-door neighbour. Next came the Parish Hall in Pictou:
Fine lantern views, one of which was himself mounted on his Red Bird bicycle, starting on his trip, dressed in a suite of clothes presented to him by the Oxford Mfg. Co. All who failed to hear this lecture missed a rare treat.(Pictou Chronicle)
The Halifax Chronicle reported:
Delightful lecture. All who attended the lecture entitled ‘Around the World Awheel’, which was given in the Methodist Church last evening…
The Windsor Tribune shared:
Owing to the very disagreeable weather on Monday, we regret to say that Karl Creelman’s interesting and valuable lecture was not largely attended. All those fortunate as to be present were much pleased.
And from the Parrsboro Leader:
‘Around the World A Wheel’ was given to a full house on Saturday evening last. Lecturer Creelman does not need any taffy as he is now so well known the world over and we imagine that, in every district where he speaks the majority of the people will hear him…
Overall, dear reader, in the four months following his return home, Karl delivered more than 20 lectures throughout Nova Scotia.
But by April 1902, he was feeling restless once again.
If you've enjoyed following Karl's journey, please consider sharing this post with others. It's a labour of love, and every share helps keep this piece of Canadian history alive.
