In 1900, Karl reached Townsville after battling rough tracks, wild heat, and a plunge into a creek with alligators nearby.
He was “heartily sick of Australia,” he wrote — and I started to feel the same. I followed his path north, but cyclone warnings, flash floods, and a six-hour drive through sugarcane fields made the journey unforgettable.
